# Use the Tax Center

> Understand how tax configuration, invoice tax lines, tax payable, and accounting reports relate without treating tax collected as revenue.

Tax is part of the invoice and accounting workflow, but tax collected from a customer is not the same thing as business revenue.

## Tax on commercial documents

Quotes and invoices can carry tax lines according to the workspace tax configuration and the document's taxable or tax-exempt state.

The quote calculation engine handles inclusive and exclusive tax separately so a tax-inclusive price is not taxed twice.

## Tax payable

When a taxable invoice is posted, the tax component can post to a tax payable account rather than Sales Revenue.

This is why invoice total and ledger revenue can differ even when the accounting is correct.

## Tax Center

Open **Accounting > Tax** to review the tax surfaces available to your finance role. Financial report access protects the current tax tab, while tax configuration actions can have additional administrative permissions.

## Tax-exempt documents

A tax-exempt quote or invoice should not retain active tax lines that contradict the exemption. The server calculation clears or ignores tax lines according to the supported tax-exempt behavior.

## Audit history

Lynka stores tax audit information for configuration changes. Treat a tax setting change as an accounting policy change that can affect future documents, not as a tool for rewriting historical posted invoices.
